Video: COLOURS-Without a Way

Wow. COLOURS have ever so slowly been building as one of my favorite shoegaze bands, and their new song and video "Without a Way" just firmly cement it. Like with his song "In the Summer", COLOURS has moved his styling more from traditional shoegaze more of a droney, dragging style that really emephesise the emptyness and pain in the songs. This is amplified with "Without a Way, as the sharp guitar riffs just fall on you again and again like ocean waves, while the industrial drum work just makes the song even more forbbiding. Not to mention the found fotage for the video, which just envoke pure pain and loss. It's almost heartbreaking to listen to, and hits you right in your gut. It's as painful as it is strangely beautiful.

Video: COLOURS-In The Summer

COLOURS has been slowly trickling out some of my favorite guitar jams for about a year now. What started as a one man shoegaze band has deformed and morphed into something more elegant. “In the Summer” is a very harrowing new track from COLOURS, a wonderfully sad song of longing over the beautiful dream pop COLOURS is now crafting. Coupled with the imagery of the video, frantic colors (hey...) swirling around as COLOURS front man Tom Crandles stands stark playing his guitar, “In the Summer” emerges into something that will be sound-tracking dreams to come. The fact that COLOURS manages to do this in just under two minutes is just startling, and a testament to their ability to craft stunning guitar pop.

COLOURS-Lost at Sea

COLOURS has finally released some new music thanks to the folks at digital label BEKO, though it’s a bit hard to believe it’s the same band. While on their debut EP was a nice mixture of modern and past shoegaze, these songs have lost lots of the noise and squeal of the guitar work, instead replaced with glisten and a slightly sunnier disposition to them. However this is not at all a slam against the band, for the quality of the shoegaze they produce comes out clearer as well. This is most evident on “Lost at Sea” with COLOURS’ vocals never being clearer, shaping around a pulsing synth line that severs the back bone to a perfect, never was Deerhunter demo that the band has reclaimed for themselves. The band's other digital release is even more representative of their new sound with "Sundown" evoking even more beach-esque vibes than "Lost at Sea". Shimmer riffs bounce of wonderfully reverbed drum machine beats, balancing sunny and hints of melancholy precisely in tune with one another. "See, Hear, Touch, Feel", is the band at the most low key yet, a simple sad song with an equally weeping guitar line to acconpany it.

Colours-S/T EP

This releases is sort of really old, but who cares when it's this good? Colours, as obvious by the spelling of their name, are an Australian entity of one shoegaze obsessed man. It's strange at a point when shoegaze is one of the most influential genres, with its essence heard in too many bands to list. However, fewer actually try to play the genre itself, or try to approach it in new ways. That's were Colours comes in. In just four songs Colours manages to cover the entire shoegaze world as it has evolved over the past twenty something years. From opener "Could I?", the EP creates the sense of being engulfed in a noisy vortex, but instead of abject horror, it's utter muli-guitar and ghostly vocal style bliss. It's meant to be blasted at the dead of night in a nightstand lamp lit room, to both indulge in and push back the encroaching darkness. It's fucking great shoegaze, and proof that Australia is the Mecca for all great music now.
